The purpose for this study was to identify what happens when a seasoned teacher goes from doing best practices and organizing structured reading time and materials to best fit the needs of her students, to a district mandated curriculum with a set of strategies called the qmust do'sq and ample amounts of materials? I compared two first grade classrooms. The first was a class in which the teacher designed reading instruction and best practices were used. In the second classroom the teacher continued to teach reading using best practices and then incorporated the Harcourt Story Town (2008) curriculum. Students in the second classroom showed gains in total reading achievement when assessed on the Developmental Reading Assessment (Beaver, 2001). The gains were reflected specifically in the areas of phonemic awareness, decoding strategies, vocabulary, and comprehension.I found that the Harcourt StoryTown (2008) is a comprehensive program designed to provide a complete reading and language arts curriculum for elementary students.
