The fast millisecond time scale characteristic of neurotransmitter release implied that the membrane fusion was controlled exquisitely by a network of regulators. Up to this point, more than 20 regulatory proteins were identified. Some of them, such as synaptotagmin, Munc18, and complexin, were extensively studied. However, the results from different laboratories were contradictory.
