This is a collection of stories about animals at Katieas Place, a small-animal shelter specializing in last-hope cases. Hundreds of animals have given volunteers years of joy and anguish. Some recovered against all odds and found homes. Some lived out their lives in shelter care. Each had a profound effect on the people who knew them. Among them was curmudgeonly Cubby who swatted his tail for waving in his face, and elderly Hannah who defended a volunteer under attack. Devilish Kris Kringle stole the latch pins for cages and delighted in watching people search for them. The job is a challenge but each volunteer would do it again in a heartbeat.
