Annotation The notion of weather in space may be foreign to many people, but Hanslmeier (geophysics, astrophysics, and meteorology, U. of Graz, Austria) explains it as the time-variable conditions in the space environment that may affect space-borne or ground-based technological systems, and in some cases even endanger human health or life. The main cause of space weather, he says, is the sun and the continuous steam of particles it emits, known as the solar wind. He identifies other sources as micrometeorites and other space debris. As there are more space vehicles, and more sensitive ground technologies, he warns that predicting space weather and preparing for it will become increasingly important.
